Prior to effective recording and mixing of sounds, the commercials were produced “live” and immediately with the cast, the crew and usually with the orchestra. A corporate sponsor hired a producer who rented writers and voice over artist to perform comedy or drama.

The industry expanded very rapidly with the emergence of television in 1950 and the already completed era of highly produced serial radio programs.

The ability to record high quality audio productions on a magnetic tape also created opportunities, as the proliferation of personal computers capable of recording.
